Honeymoon Island State Recreation Area

[Swimming] [Fishing] [Picnic] [Nature Trail] [Showers] [Concession]

Dunedin

Hog Island was renamed Honeymoon Island in 1939 when a New York developer constructed 50 palm-thached "honeymoon" bungalows for use by couples chosen through a contest sponsored by major northern department stores.

Today, you can enjoy the sun-drenched gulf beaches, the mangrove swamps and the tidal flats by simply driving across Dunedin Causeway. Naturalists will find osprey nests, a wide variety of shorebirds and one of the few remaining south florida virgin slash pine stands along the island's northern loop trail. Visitors will enjoy swimming and fishing in the clear gulf waters and can view the scenery from nearby picnic areas.

Honeymoon Island State Recreation Area is located at the extreme west end of S.R. 586, north of Dunedin.
